back old chapel for community

Woodsetts Local History Society is pleased to announce that the restoration of the Woodsetts Primitive Methodist Chapel is now finalised.  It was officially opened at a champagne reception on Saturday 10th June 2006 by Michael Bradburn, founder and chairman of the Society. On September 4th 2006 it was opened to the public and is staffed on a voluntary basis by members of the Society.

The centre is open every Monday     2pm - 4pm

                                                      Saturday  10am - 12 noon

Fiona Spiers, regional manager for the Heritage Lottery Fund said “The Chapel is a fantastic building and the Heritage Lottery Fund is dedicated to supporting projects like Woodsetts Local History Society centre which benefits the whole community. This project will totally rejuvenate the chapel bringing it back to the heart of the community and restored for future generations.”

The centre will incorporate a Local Studies Library, Research and Reading Room and a secure storage location for the Society's ever-expanding library, photographs, maps and archive material. These facilities will be made available to everyone whether members of the Society or not.

The Centre will be made available to anyone to use for research and study purposes. Local schools will be given access as and when requested by the appropriate school authority. The Centre will also be available by prior appointment for other groups and societies and for anyone unable to visit at normal opening hours. This Centre will allow visitors to come and visit Woodsetts, use the building, meet Society members and research their family and local history in a warm and friendly environment.

The history society has over 190 members attracting on some occasions well in excess of 80 members to monthly meetings which are held in St George’s Church. Our programme for this year 2009, includes some excellent speakers, on a wide variety of topics, visits and functions.  (see website for further details)
